Arizona Assisted Living Managers Need 24 CE Hours: How to Plan the Two-Year Renewal Cycle

Continuing education is easiest when it is treated as a two-year professional-development plan rather than a renewal-month emergency.

Arizona rules require a certified assisted living facility manager to obtain 24 credit hours of Board-approved continuing education during each biennial renewal period. A manager certified partway through a period earns a prorated requirement of one credit hour for each month, or part of a month, remaining in that period.

Start by knowing your renewal window

Keep the certificate expiration date somewhere you will actually see it during the year, then work backward from it.

A simple target such as six hours a quarter removes almost all of the risk, because the problem at renewal time is rarely motivation. It is that the remaining approved courses do not fit the calendar.

Board-approved matters

Not every healthcare webinar counts. Continuing education has to meet the Board approval rules, and the Board has partnered with CE Broker as the place to search for approved providers and courses.

Verify approval before enrolling rather than afterwards. A useful course that does not count still costs the time it took.

Watch the limit on self-study and online hours

Arizona rules limit self-study, online and correspondence formats to no more than 40 percent of the required credit hours.

For a 24-hour requirement, that caps those formats well short of the full total. Plan the mix of formats deliberately instead of accumulating 24 convenient online hours and discovering that a share of them cannot be applied.

Keep evidence for three years

Arizona rules require managers and administrators to maintain evidence of continuing-education attendance for three years and to make it available to the Board when required.

Check each certificate while the course is still recent. The information the Board expects is much easier to get corrected in the same week than two years later.

Do not count on extra hours carrying forward

Hours beyond the minimum required for one biennial period do not carry over into a later period.

Take whatever supports your practice, but build the next renewal plan on the next cycle rather than on a surplus from the last one.

Choose courses that solve real facility problems

The best CE plan is compliant and useful at the same time.

Dementia care, fall prevention, medication management, quality assurance, ethics and resident care all connect directly to the things that go wrong in daily operations. Choosing against your actual incident log is a better filter than choosing against the calendar.
